2018 Stanthorpe Art Prize Gala Opening & Exhibition

Visit Stanthorpe in June to see the 2018 Stanthorpe Art Prize Exhibition. The winners will be announced at the Gala Opening on Friday 15 June, and the exhibition will be open until 19 July. All works will be available to purchase. $40000 in prizes will be awarded at the opening night event on 15 June, included the first prize of $25000.

The winners of the 2018 Stanthorpe Art Prize will be announced at the Gala Opening on Friday 15 June.

Established in 1968, the biennial Stanthorpe Art Prize is the second oldest art competition in Queensland and is open to both emerging and professional artists. Artists have the chance of winning one of the several categories, with prizes totalling $40,000, including the $25,000 major prize.

The event will be opened by Gina Fairfax, QAGOMA Board Advocate. Gina is a strong advocate for access to arts and education in rural, regional and remote communities.

This year the gallery received a record number of artworks from local, national and international artists. Around 160 artworks will be on display during the exhibition from 15 June "“ 19 July 2018. All works will be available to purchase.

All award winners will be announced on Friday 15 July, except for the Public Choice & Volunteers Choice awards which will be voted on during the exhibition and awarded at the conclusion.

THE JUDGES

Ron Ramsey is Executive Director of the Art Gallery Society of NSW and has worked with the most prestigious galleries in Australia as well as being Australia's Cultural Attaché at the Embassy of Australia in Washington DC from 2004 to 2007.

Dr Kyla McFarlane is the Curator of Academic Programs (Research): The Ian Potter Museum of Art. She has previously worked both independently and held key curatorial positions at the Australian Art at Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, The Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (CCP) and Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne.

An epicentre for all visual arts, the art gallery fosters a program of regional artist exhibitions and displays that are relevant to the history and character of the region.

The gallery, home to a permanent collection of almost 900 pieces, hosts specially curated exhibitions of traditional and contemporary paintings, works on paper, ceramics, sculpture, and fibre/ textile artworks.

This strong collection of noted artists' works, is sourced from acquisitions made during the biennial Stanthorpe Art Prize.
