Don, a retired radiologist and Noni, a former radio producer and mature-aged art school student and mother of two young children have spent a lifetime collaborating on artistic projects and exploring galleries together around the world. Both, despite initially perusing careers in fields outside fine art, held lifelong ambitions of becoming artists. 'Living the Dream' is the embodiment of that desire and is their first joint exhibition.
Bursting with bold colours and gestural marks, Noni Drew's work explores the boundaries between representation and abstraction. Her work draws from personal observations and mediated images which are deconstructed and layered into abstracted compositions which hint at figures, landscapes, interiors and still lives. Noni is a current post-graduate student and the Victorian College of the Arts and her work is held in numerous collections Australia wide and internationally.
Don McOmish is a sculptural ceramicist whose work is driven as much by the process as the outcome. Using traditional Japanese methods, he develops robust forms using materials including clay from his Narre Warren North property. Don's vessels and figures display a degree of spiritual enquiry and capture the essence and quality of Australian rock and tree formations. Using a hand constructed wood fired tunnel kiln, the process of firing, using local fallen timbers, imparts serendipitous effects from flame, smoke and high temperatures. Ancient Japanese glazes using local ash further impart a sense of terroir to Don's work.
MSG Gallery - 126 Bay St, Brighton. The exhibition will run from Friday 14th October until Thursday 27th. Opening hours: Thursday to Sunday 11am-3pm.
Opening night drinks Friday 14th October 6 "“ 8pm, to RSVP and register for presales email hellononidrew@gmail.com.
