The Gold Coast Art School was established in Southport in 1995 to offer tuition in painting and drawing for adults and school age children.
It provides a foundation course which teaches the sound basics of painting while also addressing the major problem areas found in drawing and the oil painting process and how to remedy them.
From here students are encouraged to explore various painting techniques from art history, both traditional and modern, with the aim of developing a personal style best suited to the individual. A variety of mediums are introduced for students to explore as alternatives to oil painting.
Specialist workshops and short courses are run according to demand. These include advanced drawing, water colour, Sumi-e (Japanese Ink Brush Painting) with specialist tutors appointed for each.
Some of the students are already established as painters who continue to attend classes for the creative and convivial atmosphere of socialising and painting with like minded people. An added bonus to students is the external venue to produce their work whilst enjoying the benefits of advice and tuition on offer rather than painting alone.
Although largely a hobby school with a professional outlook, some students have used GCAS to prepare themselves for further studies and have become professional members of the arts and art education community. They like to think of GCAS as a fun place to be to reinforce and challenge the artist in everyone.
