Enjoying a distinguished career performing throughout Europe, Australia's Alexander Negrin returns after more than 30 years abroad for a one-off special performance with The Metropolitan Orchestra at the ABC Centre in Ultimo on May 5th.
Born in Sydney in 1977, Alexander commenced his musical studies at a very early age beginning with piano and later adding organ and percussion in addition to becoming a chorister with the Choir of St. James' Church, King Street. His incredible debut at only nine years of age saw him conducting Beethoven's Fifth Symphony with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House to become one of the youngest conductors ever to have conducted a symphony orchestra. After finishing school, he continued his musical studies in Austria where in 2003 where he worked with Vladimir Ashkenazy at the Czech Philharmonic in Prague and the veteran conductor Franz-Paul Decker. After being awarded the prestigious Karl Boehm Prize, named after the esteemed Austrian conductor, Negrin became the conductor at the opera house in Baden, a position he occupied for six years whilst fulfilling concert engagements throughout Europe.
Alexander Negrin has conducted concerts in Austria, Germany, France, Hungary, Poland, Finland and Italy and his opera experience includes conducting La Bohème, Aida, Tosca, Fidelio, Carmen, La Traviata, Die Fledermaus, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and the Tales of Hoffmann. In 2016, he was asked by the renowned Russian violinist Vadim Repin to conduct at a gala concert in Repin's honour in Budapest. More recently, he took the Orchestre National de Lorraine on tour, and these concerts garnered high praise in France, leading to further concert engagements there.
Alexander Negrin is also an accomplished organist, and has given organ recitals in major cathedrals and churches in Germany, Austria, England, the USA and Australia.
The performance with TMO marks his first appearance in his home city since the well-remembered Sydney Opera House debut 31 years ago, and for this reason Beethoven's Fifth Symphony has been chosen as a special highlight for this outstanding program of orchestral favourites.
Tickets from $15.00 - $35.00 are available by visiting www.metorchestra.com.au/tickets or call (02) 8004-3472.
