Students at Norseman District High School worked with various screen printing and visual art techniques to create unique reflections on what brings their heart joy!
In Term 4 this year AWESOME artists Melanie Maclou and Stu McMillan travelled onto the lands of the Ngadju people to Norseman District High School. They worked with the year 3-4 and high school students over a one week residency to explore screen printing, visual art techniques and environmental art.

During the residency both groups of students experimented numerous art mediums such as screen printing with found objects from nature, drawing and cyanotype printing. The students reflected on the 2024 Creative Challenge theme of ‘heart’ and their own abstract expression of the theme and what brings their heart joy. This engaged the young artists creativity and they worked with materials and processes which sparked happiness and joy in their art. The participants were prompted to consider design and composition of their pieces and how to arrange their materials to achieve the desired result. Inspired by their composition skills the students worked collaboratively to create a large-scale compilation of their individual pieces.

At the conclusion of the residency a printmaking exhibition was held at the school assembly. All students, school staff and community members attended to celebrate the young artists works, The large collaborative piece was installed in the school for all students and staff to enjoy in the future.

Creative Challenge is AWESOME Arts’ core education program that embeds contemporary teaching artists in schools across the state. The residency program aims to build pride in community and explore self-expression through project management and creative learning skills.

This residency was proudly supported by Healthway and the Go for 2&5 message.
