This exhibition highlights Aboriginal art through the lens of the artists' skin names, specifically the Napurrula skin name, and features an all-female showcase of artists whose works bring forth the richness and diversity of Aboriginal culture.

Curated by Director Mike Mitchell, the exhibition brings together a powerful collection of paintings from female artists hailing from remote Central Australian Aboriginal communities. The exhibition highlights the artists' connection to the Napurrula skin name, a significant cultural identity that ties them to their family, clan, and ancestral land.

The Napurrula skin name is integral to the Aboriginal kinship system, offering insight into family connections, traditional roles, and the spiritual ties to land. In selecting works from female artists who hold this skin name, the exhibition shines a spotlight on the contributions of Aboriginal women in preserving and passing on cultural knowledge through visual arts.

"Art is deeply personal and tied to identity, and for these women, their works are powerful expressions of both their individual experiences and their roles within their communities," says Mike Mitchell. ‘These works not only reflect the women’s connection to their heritage but also celebrate the ongoing role of Aboriginal women in the cultural and artistic landscapes of Australia’.

‘Napurrula’ will be on display at Mitchell Fine Art from 18th February to 15 March 2025. The gallery invites visitors to celebrate the exceptional talent of these female Aboriginal artists and to reflect on the vital contributions of women to both the Aboriginal arts and broader cultural communities.
