Graduating from the National Art School in 1962, Ann Thomson has become a force in the Australian art scene with numerous solo and group exhibitions. Her work is held in many collections including the Art Gallery of NSW and the Australian National Art Gallery.
Ann Thomson was nine years old when she painted her first still life in Brisbane. 'I was lucky that I found what I needed to do early,' she says of becoming an artist.
Enrolled after the war at Somerville House, her teachers including Betty Churcher, Joan Kerr and Caroline Barker became lifelong friends.
Often described as abstract, Thomson rejects this label as her works are drawn from visual memories of places and things; “I might abstract something, but I don't just paint shapes” says Thomson. Described by the late Edmund Capon as “one of the most interesting and intuitive artists in Australia today”, Thomson’s works are not intended to replicate a scene or a landscape, but rather evoke a sense of place.
Ann Thomson’s exhibition ‘Change Takes Time’ will be opened on Friday 3rd March by QAGOMA Director Chris Saines.
On Saturday 4th March from 11am, Mitchell Fine Art will hold a panel discussion convened by Vanessa Van Ooyen, Director QUT Galleries and Museums in conversation with Ann Thomson, Joanna Capon OAM, and David Malouf AO.
The exhibition is showing at Mitchell Fine Art, 86 Arthur Street Fortitude Valley from 28 February – 18 March 2023.
