Artspace Opens Applications for Expanded Two-Year Studio Program
Applications are now open for the Artspace Studio Program. Artspace’s Interim Executive Director Michelle Newton said: ‘We are thrilled to be able to offer two-year studio residencies from June 2025. With this new development, Artspace moves beyond simply providing rent-free spaces for artists, and towards the creation of a program for deepened reflection, critical feedback, sustained curatorial advocacy and visibility within the Australian and international arts sector. This will enable artists a sustainable practice into the future.’

As part of the expanded residencies, Artspace will offer increased scholarship and mentoring, including a set of structured programs to accompany the rent-free working spaces and a dedicated curator. The 1+1 residency model (two years with a renewal process after 12 months) and staggered cohort entries (with intakes of five one-year studio residences each year from June 2026 onwards) will encourage risk, experimentation, and the continual dynamic exchange of ideas between artists.

During their residency, each artist will receive:
● A flexible, rent-free light-filled studio space of approximately 45 sqm with wifi, air conditioning, internal sink and large work desk

● 24/7 studio access

● Opportunities to participate in Artspace’s Open Studios, public programs, and outreach initiatives

● Curatorial advocacy including introductions to local and international curators through Artspace’s peer network

● A location in the heart of Sydney, close to peer organisations including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Firstdraft, National Art School and UNSW Art & Design

● Access to Artspace’s Multipurpose Space and the Franco Belgiorno-Nettis Archive to support research and new work in development

Applications will be assessed by a selection panel that includes all members of the Artspace team, Board artist representatives, and one external panel member from a peer institution. The successful artists will be notified and announced in early May.

Applications are now open via Artspace’s website https://artspace.org.au/studios and close on Wednesday 2 April 2025, 11.59pm AEDT. Download and read the Application Guidelines before proceeding to the Application Form. Please direct all enquiries to studios@artspace.org.au. Find the Application Form here.
