Aussie 'export' Short+Sweet to open in Hollywood
Short+Sweet, Australia's - and the world's "“ 'biggest little play festival' - is heading to the USA in September! True to its vision of establishing 'a global theatre brand', Short+Sweet, the Australian powerhouse of 10-minute theatre (which has already spread its message successfully throughout Australasia, Asia and the Middle East) has confirmed a bold step into the biggest entertainment market of all "“ Los Angeles! @ShortSweetFest #shortsweethollywood
Short+Sweet Hollywood will premiere at the Stella Adler Theatre on Hollywood Blvd on 1 September for a four week season that will make a splash among local actors, writers and directors "“ and also provide a platform for many Aussie expats who are based there.
Mark Cleary, founder and international artistic director of the festival, says Short+Sweet is the perfect bridge between theatre and film in the world's movie capital.
"Hundreds if not thousands of Australians are currently in Los Angeles, seeking their 'big break' or already making their mark.
"They know as well as any American writer, actor or director how important it is to showcase their wares to agents, producers and talent scouts. However, with Hollywood life always centered around a whirlwind of classes, castings, meetings and introductions, there is little time for stage performances or full-scale plays. Ten-minute theatre solves that."
According to LA-based producers Matt Quinn and Bertha Rodriguez, "Short+Sweet, with its unique formula of multiple short plays on any one night, is the perfect vehicle for new work and new talent "“ AND the ideal environment for agents to see it!"
Organisers are keen to hear from Australian and international Short+Sweet participants who have been paving their way in LA and would like to be on board with this incredible opportunity. Australian writers (as always) are invited to submit their work. Winners of current Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane festivals will also be invited to join the LA season.
There are huge cultural benefits for Australia in taking Short+Sweet to Los Angeles and partnerships with the Hollywood Fringe and The Australian Theatre Co (in LA) have already been confirmed.
Cleary will be in LA for the festival launch on May 3 at the Stella Adler Theatre where a number of works from the existing Short+Sweet repertoire will be performed.
In June there will be information sessions as well as masterclasses in writing and directing short plays by Australian Short+Sweet doyen Alex Broun at the Matrix Theatre on Melrose Ave as part of the Australian Theatre Company's season there. Interested creatives may express interest by emailing hollywood@shortandsweet.org
