Creative Challenge is AWESOME's core cultural community development program. When they're not running the festival, they send artists into schools to offer high quality arts experiences for young people to explore their individual and community identity, communicate their unique identity and instil a sense of pride in who they are and where they live.

This year welcomed our fourth residency with Yandeyarra Community School in the AWESOME Arts' Creative Challenge program. This year's residency was delivered by multidisciplinary artists Sete Tele and Darren Hutchens, whose collective experience range from large public murals to dance and martial arts. Each day students were encouraged with dance, line drawing, painting, portraiture (and even paintball throwing!) to develop the design of a large-scale colourful mural to be painted onto the Yandeyarra School's wall. Exploring this year's theme of Tell Me More.

Sete and Darren fostered students' individual and community stories into a stunning panel design that reflected the voices of the students and Yandeyarra community. Students, teachers and even some community members came to help paint the wall. Students loved exploring their creativity through movement and dance. Some of the children who participated in the residency also presented a choreographed dance performance at a local community meeting, which was a huge source of pride for the school community and the artists. This two-week residency was proudly supported by BHP.
