Artists Jodie Davidson and Addam were thrilled to attend Coolgardie Primary School on the lands of the Wongutha people to explore self-expression, community, and painting.
Children started the residency process discussing the many ways and reasons that people “gather” together. Discovering that these were all tied to ideas of family, community, school, and celebration. This grew into designing depictions of flora, seeds, and iconography that best represented their diverse local community (including school, COVID, and their much-loved basketball).
These designs were then collated and developed into a large-scale mural that was painted permanently on the school grounds. The mural was unveiled to friends and family at the School Colour run event. Participants and their families expressed delight and pride in sharing local communities’ stories in their work.
‘We used process-based activities and group discussions to encourage children to use visual imagery to tell their community story. Students collaborated in the creation of drawings which were turned into stencils and artwork. This mural extended from an earlier 2019 mural which celebrated the school's 125-year anniversary.’ Said Artist Jodie Davidson.
Creative Challenge is AWESOME Arts annual artist in residency program. In 2021 we visited 22 communities across Western Australia to present process driven workshops with school aged children.
This residency was supported by Healthway with the Go for 2 and 5 healthy eating message.
Healthway Acting Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Hubble said Creative Challenge offered fun and engaging ways for children to learn about the importance of eating fruit and vegetables.
“We’re delighted to be supporting this annual program once again, which is set to reach hundreds of young students in remote WA communities,” Mr Hubble said.
“With the guidance of professional artists, students will have the opportunity to use their own creativity to explore arts activities and healthy eating themes.”
