Bach stands apart from his contemporaries. No one before or after him reached his level of excellence relative to their own field. His contributions to the art of music far outweigh those of his predecessors and successors, resulting in him almost single-handedly developing Western music to its peak.
Opening the program is Bach’s seminal work, Prelude and Fugue No. 1 in C Major (from The Well-Tempered Clavier), performed by acclaimed Australian harpsichordist and Professor of Historical Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Neal Peres Da Costa.
A variety of Baroque jewels follow, including Bach’s trio sonata for flute, violin and basso continuo written for King Frederick the Great, the final 5 variations of the beloved Goldberg Variations, and “one of the most sublime descriptions of the soul in Baroque art” Aria No. 3 sung by Perth-based soprano Bonnie de la Hunty from Cantata BWV 105.
Don’t miss this unforgettable performance that delves into the mind of a genius who changed western civilization forever.
