Basketball inspires new mural in Yulga Jinna
West Australian artist duo Charlotte and Kero O’Shea had a wonderful 2-week Creative Challenge Residency in Yulga Jinna.
From Monday the 26th of July to Friday the 6th of August the AWESOME Artists explored design, drawing, painting, film making, interviewing and puppet making with the students at Yulga Jinna remote community school. Utilising these arts practises they explored the 2021 Creative Challenge theme of ‘Gathering’, the students expressed their love for basketball and discussed how basketball allows them to facilitate community gathering and allows them to travel to other communities to gather there. This residency was proudly supported by Healthway and the Go For 2&5 message.
The primary school students worked with Charlotte and Kero to create puppets and masks from recycled materials including socks! The colourful creations were used in storytelling activities. Filmmaker Kero shared his processes with the students to help them write short and entertaining skits about healthy eating. The students got to learn how to use filming techniques as well as scriptwriting, interviewing and more. The young artists especially enjoyed talking to the camera!
The high school students collaborated with the artists in the process of designing and painting a bright new mural onto the school walls. Once basketball was identified as an important part of gathering for the students it quickly became the main focus for their mural project. The mural incorporated basketball, native animals, representations of other local activities and painted hands and feed. The end result reflecting the students' pride in their community!
