Beneath the Tame is a two person exhibition of sculpture by Mary Anne Barkhouse (AOCA, RCA) and Anna Williams curated by Lisa A. Pai.

Mary Anne Barkhouse AOCA, RCA belongs to the Nimpkish band, Kwakiutl First Nation. Working with a variety of materials Barkhouse examines environmental concerns and Indigenous culture through the use of animal imagery. She currently lives and works in the beaver wetlands of the Haliburton Highlands of Ontario.

The artist would like to thank the Ontario Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Hnatyshyn Foundation for their financial support.

Anna Williams was born in Ottawa, ON. After studying sculpture and printmaking at Mount Allison University she returned to Ottawa where she continues to live and work. Her artwork employs the animal and narrative to examine the construction and manipulation of female identity and power relationships in contemporary society.

Williams has had solo shows in both Canada and the U.S., and had works purchased by the Canada Council Art Bank, the Government of Canada, the City of Ottawa, The Kamm Foundation, and Humber College as well as numerous national and international private collections. Williams has also created public works in Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal, is currently completing a large installation piece funded by grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the City of Ottawa, and has upcoming shows at the Ottawa Art Gallery, the Varley Gallery, and the Station Gallery.

Lisa A. Pai, MA Comparative Literature, has owned and operated L.A. PAI gallery since 2000. She is proud to have successfully nominated two recent recipients of the Governor General/Saidye Bronfman Awards, Canada"s foremost distinction for excellence in fine crafts. Mary Anne Barkhouse (AOCA, RCA) appartient à la bande de Nimpkish, Première nation Kwakiutl. Au moyen d"une variété de matériaux et de l"imagerie animale, Barkhouse examine des enjeux environnementaux et la culture autochtone. Elle vit et travaille actuellement dans les marécages de castors des hautes terres de Haliburton en Ontario.

L"artiste tient à remercier le Conseil des arts de l"Ontario, le Conseil des arts du Canada et la Fondation Hnatyshyn pour leur soutien financier.

Anna Williams est née à Ottawa, Ont. Après avoir étudié la sculpture et la gravure à l"Université Mount Allison, elle est revenue à Ottawa pour y vivre et y travailler. Dans son travail artistique, elle se sert d"un récit animalier pour examiner la construction et la manipulation de l"identité féminine, ainsi que les relations de pouvoir dans la société contemporaine.

Des expositions individuelles de son travail ont été organisées au Canada et aux États-Unis. La Banque d"œuvres d"art du Conseil des arts du Canada, le gouvernement du Canada, la Ville d"Ottawa, la Fondation Kamm et le Collège Humber se sont portés acquéreurs de ses œuvres, qui figurent aussi dans de nombreuses collections privées au pays et à l"étranger. Williams, qui a aussi créé des œuvres d"art public à Ottawa, Toronto et Montréal, termine actuellement une grande installation subventionnée par le Conseil des arts du Canada et la Ville d"Ottawa. Ses œuvres seront exposées bientôt à la Galerie d"art d"Ottawa, la Varley Gallery et la Station Gallery.

Détentrice d"une maîtrise en littérature comparée, Lisa A. Pai est propriétaire de la galerie L.A. PAI qu"elle gère depuis 2000. Elle tire une grande satisfaction d"avoir mis en nomination deux lauréats récents du Prix du Gouverneur général et du Prix Saidye-Bronfman, la distinction la plus prestigieuse pour l"excellence dans les métiers d"art au Canada.
