Bungaree Students Create a Statement from the Heart
AWESOME Artists Annick Akanni and Matthew McVeigh travelled onto the lands of the Noongar People to Bungaree Primary School in Term 3 to spend one week with the students to work with visual arts mediums. They explored textile art forms, natural dyeing with leaves and organic objects, and visual art work with the participants which contributed to a large scale mural piece which was installed in the school.

Using the 2024 Creative Challenge theme of heart the artists asked participants to think on what heart meant to them, what filled their hearts and how do they use their hearts. The students engaged in exciting collaborative discussions about heart and used visual art techniques to create colourful mind-maps of their thoughts.

The artists students discussed The Uluru Statement which inspired the participants to create their Bungaree Statement from the Heart. They worked together on large scale canvases using textile techniques, symbol and hand painting, and written thoughts and statements from the young artists. These artforms allowed the unique voices of the participants to be shared whilst contributing to the final united artwork.

The final piece was installed and the participants welcomed their peers, school staff and the principal into the space by singing a local Noongar song alongside the artwork. A generous platter of fresh fruit, veg and snacks were provided for all to share whilst celebrating the student’s hard work and achievements.

This residency was proudly supported by Healthway and the Go for 2&5 message.
