Celebratory drums in East Kalgoorlie!
East Kalgoorlie students celebrate the end of their Creative Challenge residency with drum beats, costumes and healthy food.
AWESOME Artists Cecille Williams and Peter Keelan visited East Kalgoorlie Primary School on the lands of the Wongutha people for a two-week Creative Challenge to host a ‘Gathering’ of great imaginative proportions! This residency was proudly supported by BHP.
Cecile and Peter worked with the students to explore ideas about this year’s Creative Challenge theme of ‘Gathering’. The artists’ led workshops in theatre, mime, visual arts, sculpture, soundscapes, music and experimental sound to investigate the students’ creative ideas of what a Gathering can be and what brings people together. Their discussions grew from familial, local, international and otherworldly gatherings!
Their process of play and experimentation ultimately came together with the creation and gathering of a new species! Their abstract creatures drew on familiar elements of their favourite animals and human beings, reflecting the unique imaginations of each student.
Music and food were also decided to be important elements in a gathering. The students’ devised a welcoming ritual for their final celebration that involved improvised and experimental drum beats, costumes, and the sharing of fruit to thank and acknowledge everyone involved, including teachers and parents who attended.
