Chunky Move presents 'Next Move 11'

Published by: Zilla and Brook | 5-Oct-2018
Chunky Move presents Next Move 11. Featuring two new works by acclaimed dancers and emerging choreographers Lauren Langlois and Joel Bray, this dystopian double bill invites audiences into two surrealist worlds; one of technological obsession the other a ceremonial ground of light and sound. In these two distinct collaborative pieces, non-linear, looping narratives and the body become a site of investigation into the self, memory, and imagination.

In an absurd vision of a future that's hurtling towards us, Lauren Langlois and James Vu Anh Pham (An Act of Now, Depth of Field, Complexity of Belonging), present physicality as the last frontier of what it means to be human. Through a hybrid of contemporary dance and physical theatre, Nether lures audiences into an exhilarating visceral labyrinth, where the metahuman, memory, and technological obsessions collide.

Lauren Langlois first joined Chunky Move to collaborate with choreographer Antony Hamilton on his work Keep Everything (2012), commissioned as part of the Next Move program in 2012. Since then, she has performed in Anouk van Dijk's productions LUCID (2016), Complexity of Belonging (2014), 247 Days (2013) and An Act of Now (2012).

A collision of rituals, Dharawungara by Joel Bray reimagines the theatre as a ceremonial ground of light and sound, as he explores how to breathe life into this Wiradjuri rite he has only ever read about. Songwoman Naretha Williams will join Bray with driving beats as they question the connection between rites-of-passage, healing and wholeness.

Joel is an ongoing performer with Chunky Move and has performed and toured in Complexity of Belonging (2014), and with Anouk van Dijk and Falk Richter in Safe Places (2016) at the Frankfurt Schauspielhaus. Joel's career has spanned across France, Portugal and Israel with JeanClaude Gallotta, Company CeDeCe, Kolben Dance, Machol Shalem Dance House, Yoram Karmi's FRESCO Dance Company, Niv Sheinfeld & Oren Laor and Roy Assaf.
