Contemporary Australian indigenous art is quickly establishing itself as the most important and lucrative cultural export Australia has produced in the last 50 years. Some of the latest sales figures for contemporary Australian indigenous art sold in recent US auctions are astounding, demonstrating the high demand for quality top tier work by some of Australia's most historically important aboriginal artists.

In recent years, foreign celebrity collectors, like actor Steve Martin, have amassed large and important collections of contemporary Australian indigenous art and, in so doing, have drawn the attention of art lovers and collectors outside Australia to the works of artists like Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Clifford Possum, Rover Thomas, Barbara Weir and other luminaries of the indigenous art scene.

The growing interest and popularity of these artists, (most of whom are now deceased), in the US, Europe and Asia, and the limited number of works available in the market, means that the main way most people have to access top tier work is through the Auction House.. and that can be an expensive exercise that can tend to drive prices for these works ever higher.

Its rare then to see a collection of paintings by Emily, Possum, Weir or Thomas belonging to one of the most well-known and authoritative Australian collectors of Contemporary Indigenous art at a newly established Commercial Gallery in the inner Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

The current exhibition at Gallery Elysium entitled Emily & Friends contains over 30 paintings from the personal collection of Hank Ebes and features some of the most well known and loved indigenous artists of the last 50 years including: Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Kudditji Kngwarreye, Rover Thomas, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa and Barbara Weir just to name a few.

Indigenous works of this calibre and provenance rarely come up for exhibition and sale at Commercial galleries. So, if you are an art-lover interested in Australian indigenous art, don't hesitate to visit the exhibition before it ends. It's a real feast for the eyes and heart. The exhibition can be viewed at Gallery Elysium, 440-444 Burwood Rd in Hawthorn until January 31, 2020.
