Counter Forces: Fire and Water. Peggy Griffiths & Jan Griffiths

Presented by Warringarri Arts. Peggy Griffiths and Jan Griffiths, her daughter, work with elemental forces of fire and water, painting and ceramics. Water refers to the winding of waterways into the Ord River as they flow over the traditional country of Peggy's mother and grandfather. Peggy Griffiths is acclaimed for paintings that document and capture the movement of wind through this spinifex country: evidence of the live spirit of culture.The ceramic works are the result of a series of exchange residencies organised by Warringarri Arts in Kununurra WA: in Adelaide (working with Gus Clutterbuck at the Jam Factory) and in Perth (at Mundaring Art Centre) in 2017. Jan Griffiths began working in ceramics in 2016 and is fascinated by the history of droving and what it meant Aboriginal people who were not paid for their work. Her father Alan Griffiths an eminent artist whose work featured in The National (2017) at Carriageworks in Sydney, was an excellent horseman, stockman and drover.

Two women, two generations and two disciplines combine in this exhibition to capture histories of land, spirit and contemporary Indigenous culture.
