Creative play at Yandeyarra Remote Community School
AWESOME Arts were excited to return to Yandeyarra on the lands of the Kariyarra people for their fifth returning Creative Challenge. Students explored the theme of ‘Gathering’ with artists Matt Aitken and Nathan Gardiner through music-making, mixed and digital media, and a variety of visual arts techniques.
Creative Challenge is AWESOME Arts’ core education program that presents artists-in-residencies in schools across the state that aims to build pride in community and self-expression through the arts. Creative Challenge workshops were presented at Yandeyarra Remote Community School for two weeks and was proudly supported by BHP.
The students were so excited to experiment with a variety of advanced music techniques including a loop station, microphone effects, sampling local instruments, rhythm, tempo, layering sounds and echo. The students also explored a number of visual arts practises from pendulum swinging to splatter painting a crayon melting! The students enjoyed utilising these techniques to reflect local wildlife and form their own stories.
Through the varied, textural and musical workshops, over 80 artworks were created by the students and exhibited for the community celebration on the final Friday! The celebration brought together members of the community, proud parents and the students who shared in a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and gave tours of the school’s Creative Challenge installation.
