David employs the technique of Nerikomi', a Japanese term that refers to the layering, cutting and merging of different coloured clays. Pigments are mixed into wet clay, integrating the colour throughout rather than painting it. The coloured porcelain clays are layered, stacked and compressed to construct a solid block, creating a pepper like a pattern permeating through the clay. From simple stripes to marbled swirls and intricate patterns, the design is revealed when the block is sliced in cross-sections.
After laboriously preparing and shaping the clay it is not uncommon for the entire work to split, crack or break during the firing process, making the final artwork uncertain and surprising.
