Wearable art created by participants.
During the 2022 September school holidays AWESOME Artists Lauren Greatorex and Natalie Zuchetti travelled to Port Hedland on Kariyarra Country. AWESOME Arts partnered with Junction Co. Courthouse Gallery to run a holiday drop-in style program over the September school holidays to create artworks for the upcoming “Open Borders – the 26th Parallel and Beyond” exhibition. This exhibition encourages young people in the Pilbara to reflect on the strengths and challenges of growing up regionally and how it has impacted their vision for the future.
During the residency, children were invited to a series of workshops designed to enrich the participants understanding of their community, traditional lands and creative skills. Children explored sculpture using recycled materials, weaving, textiles, painting, and community storytelling
Local Artist Lauren shared important cultural stories as the participants created art and reflected on the themes and ideas of the narratives. Through this process they were inspired to create wearable art, sculptures and collaborative paintings.
AWESOME artists and attending guests celebrated the residency experience by travelling through the gallery space with the finished pieces. They then gathered outside to celebrate the achievements with a healthy picnic.
Creations are exhibited as a part of a larger exhibition of youth works in the Courthouse Gallery in Port Hedland (26 November – 17 January). This residency was proudly supported by BHP.
