2022 Strike A Chord Winners JPMS Ensemble Volante
Strike A Chord invites full time school students up to Grade 12 across Australia to form chamber music ensembles between three and eight players in any vocal or instrumental combination, performing music that is ‘classical’ in style.
Musica Viva Australia launched the Strike A Chord in 2020. Its aim is to provide an opportunity for students to improve their instrumental/vocal skills and foster a love of chamber music amongst young people. Over its three iterations, around 1,400 young musicians from 189 different schools across every state and territory have participated in Strike a Chord.
Musica Viva Australia’s CEO Anne Frankenberg said, “This is an incredible, unique competition which has seen some lasting and impactful results. Of the 157 young artists who have performed in the Grand Final, nearly 50% have gone on to study music at tertiary level: 65 in Australia and 10 currently studying internationally.”
Strike A Chord is not just for aspiring musicians: the Novice section is free to enter for beginners, playing at levels up to AMEB Grade 4 (or equivalent).
With a total prize pool worth over $60,000, comprising of cash and professional development prizes awarded at all stages of the competition (including the Novice section), Strike A Chord will give students the opportunity to explore their potential and discover the joy of making music, whatever their level of ability.
In addition to the prizes, twelve aspiring groups from across Australia will be invited to perform live at Melbourne Recital Centre for the Grand Final on Saturday 31 August 2024.
Entries will close on Thursday 30 May and finalists will be announced on Friday 21 June.
