Excellent Art in the new Redcliffe Regional Art Gallery
Striving for the pursuit of artistic perfection is the backbone of the annual RASart Exhibition of Excellence and is testimony to the passion of the 400+ strong membership of Redcliffe Art Society (RAS). From very humble beginnings back in the late 1950's the success that followed a local art competition fueled the passionate drive to constitute the Art Society in 1961 and planted the seed for RAS to champion the arts. Much of the council's art collection contains winning RAS artworks. The current competition is therefore aptly named.

The new Redcliffe Regional Gallery, the venue for the Exhibition of Excellence, is a contemporary art hub consisting of separate display spaces. Situated opposite the Redcliffe RSL and nearby Redcliffe Jetty and Redcliffe Sunday markets, the new central location is a long-awaited treat for art lovers. The bold and eye-catching A R T sign on the exterior draws one into the Gallery. The RASart Exhibition of Excellence is one of the first installations in this beautiful urban space. It will showcase an extraordinary collection of works by members of RAS. Categories include land and street scape, sea and water scape, portraiture and figure, still life and interior, abstract and contemporary. Most works are available to purchase.
Winners are prized for first, second and third places overall, with a single winner representing each category. Since 2014, the major monetary prize is donated by Bendigo Bank, Margate. This generous gift is testimony to their support of particular local events which in turn enhances community interest in the arts and culture. The impact of Covid on business expenditure during lean times makes their continued sponsorship of first prize overall extra special. Kind monetary gifts from other local sponsors, foster the prestige of being a competition contender. Preselection of the works means only a chosen number of paintings are hung.
RAS members consider it a privilege and a wonderful opportunity to belong to the society. The Society celebrates its 60th birthday in 2021. It has consistently enriched the arts and culture of Redcliffe and the surrounding region. The Society creates a great meeting place and promotes the cultivation and appreciation of the fine arts by providing public programs including demonstrations, art classes, workshops and exhibitions.
