Exclusive Underwater Nudes Photographic Exhibition
Nereids: an exhibition of Underwater Nudes photographed between Australia and the Solomon Islands. In ancient Greek mythology, the supernatural sea nymphs are referred to as Nereids ('ne-reeds') and were believed to inhabit the oceans, representing everything that is beautiful about the sea. The Nereids were reputed to be the most beautiful and beguiling of the sea nymphs. Like all nymphs, the Nereids had the gift of prophecy and divination. Each image is a limited edition of 3. Australian photographer, Joel Coleman exhibits his latest of goddess-like series of underwater nudes at No Vacancy Project Space in April.
The series, photographed predominantly in the clear waters of the Solomon Islands, is on exhibit from 11-23 April with the Opening Night on Thursday 13th April.
Coleman"s series took him three years to complete with the majority of that time in search for the perfect look he wanted his model to have. He met Lauren Vickers on a swimwear shoot and, as an ex-water polo player, Coleman says "she is as close to a mermaid any person could be. She was the perfect person to bring my imagined series to life".
The result is a series of 12 Limited Edition artworks, with an edition size of three prints only per image, on exhibition for a two week period only before being taken to Sydney.
"I wanted to keep this latest collection very exclusive, with only three purchasers worldwide to own each image." Joel Coleman said.
Each of the images is named after one of the "Nereids", the ancient Greek nymphs of the sea, with a name that is reflective of the individual image.
As a photographer, Joel Coleman lives by a word most have never heard of: Autotelic. It means "a creative work having an end or purpose in itself". For Joel, it explains his work in that creating a series of images purely as an artistic adventure is a beautiful thing.
