'Broken' by Mirra Whale. 53.5 x 63.5cm. Oil on linen.
Mirra Whale is a Sydney based artist whose artworks explore the formal and conceptual limits of the genre of still life. Within her practice Mirra utlises everyday household objects and presents them from another angle.
Mirra’s latest exhibition pays homage to the quiet beauty found in the act of still life painting and the everchanging relationship between shape, colour and form.
“There is a quiet beauty that is entangled within the act of ‘still life ‘painting. Meticulously scanning the many perfections and imperfections that make each object unique and beautiful”, says Whale.
The works in the show were inspired and created during an artist’s residency at Tweed Regional Gallery where Mirra was surrounded by Margaret Olley’s loved, prized, everyday possessions.
“This show is a salute to possessions we have in everyday life, from well loved rugs, a matchbox, ginger jar, vases, bowls and flowers,” says Whale. “It is a salute to the act of still life painting, getting lost in the quiet and still.”
The exhibition is showing from 3rd – 28th September 2024. An opening event will be held on Saturday 7th September from 2pm with Mirra in attendance. This is a free event, no rsvp’s required.
Mitchell Fine Art is located at 86 Arthur St in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. The gallery is open 6 days a week and provides free onsite parking.
