Experimental Textile Art in Kununurra!
Students from St Joseph's Primary School in Kununurra explored numerous digital and tactile art techniques during a one-week Creative Challenge residency.
In November 2024 AWESOME Artists Annick Akanni and Sete Tele travelled onto the lands of the Miriwoong Gajerrong People to St Joseph’s Primary School in Kununurra. The artists spend one week in residence at the school to work with the students across visual art, textile design and storytelling.
The students were welcomed into the Creative Challenge workshop space and experimented with storytelling techniques, poetry and sharing narratives with their peers. They further explored numerous team activities such as movement and large visual art drawings which strengthened their teamwork. Building on the techniques they experimented with, the participants worked with textile pieces and used their creativity to find ways to design and place them together to form a final piece. Other students were drawn to digital art and experimented with editing and portraiture.
On the final day of residency the students transformed the library into a pop-up gallery for the school students and school staff to walk through and celebrate the young artists’ hard work. A generous platter of fresh fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks were laid out for all to enjoy whilst exploring the gallery space.
Creative Challenge is AWESOME Arts’ core education program that embeds contemporary teaching artists in schools across the state. The residency program aims to build pride in community and explore self-expression through project management and creative learning skills.
This residency was proudly supported by Healthway and the Go for 2&5 message.
