The NSW Visual Arts Emerging Fellowship is a significant visual arts Fellowship delivered in partnership with the NSW Government, through Create NSW and Artspace.
The seven finalists – Eddie Abd, Chun Yin Rainbow Chan, Cindy Yuen-Zhe Chen, Joe Wilson and Chanelle Collier, Emily Parsons-Lord, and Genevieve Felix Reynolds – will have their work exhibited at the National Art School in Darlinghurst from Wednesday 24 August to Sunday 11 September. The finalists’ work will be assessed by a judging panel to determine who will be awarded the Fellowship in 2022.
The recipient will receive funding and mentorship support valued at $30,000, enabling a visual artist at the beginning of their career to undertake self-directed professional development.
Alexie Glass-Kantor, Executive Director of Artspace, said:
This collection of artists has shown immense resilience and determination, despite the challenges faced throughout the past 18-months, to not only realise ambitious, site-specific installations but forge friendships with one another. As a group, the finalists applied for and secured a $36,263 Arts and Cultural Funding Program grant from Create NSW to produce new commissions for the exhibition. This year we have embraced a unique opportunity to strengthen our partnership and present the Fellowship award with the National Art School. We continue to be impressed by the collegiality and esteem held by the finalists as they demonstrate themselves to be among the most remarkable emerging artists in New South Wales.
Minister for the Arts Ben Franklin, said:
The NSW Visual Arts Emerging Fellowship is an outstanding initiative that accelerates the career development of the next generation of artists in NSW, while celebrating the creativity and ingenuity of our creative sector. The NSW Government is proud to partner with Artspace to present this prestigious opportunity that offers all seven finalists an extraordinary platform to exhibit their work at the National Art School.
National Art School Director and CEO, Steven Alderton, said:
The National Art School is thrilled to host this exciting exhibition with Artspace to celebrate our Fellowship finalists, some of Australia's best emerging artists working across such different mediums and materials. Presenting this show on our campus is also important to us as an independent art school, offering inspiration to our students who will soon be pursuing their own careers. Congratulations to everyone involved in this show. One Fellowship will be awarded to the successful emerging visual artist, with all finalists receiving professional curatorial support and mentorship over three months to present work for exhibition.
With over 100 years of history, the Fellowship is a key exhibition for profiling the dynamism and breadth of emerging contemporary artistic practice in NSW.
