"I work intuitively with black leather, I cut and stitch and stuff this coÂÂrporeal material to re-flesh it into organic soft sculptures. I have a vague vision of the presence of the thing that I am compelled to make then I surrender to the process to bring it into being. In a similar way, I meditatively mark ink scratches on crumpled paper, mapping out an illusory skin. Resulting sculptures, installations and drawings evoke uncanny hybrids of plant, body and landscape that hint at desire and fear of entropic nature.
There is a shadow of guilt in the things I create, a sense of penance for the will to survive that has led human culture to attempt to dominate the natural environment. To make my shadowy tactile works is like feeling blindly for the tenuous skin of the visible that connects us to the world."
Talitha has exhibited in artist run spaces, contemporary art organisations and commercial galleries throughout Australia. In 2011 Talitha completed Masters by Research in Creative Arts at Charles Darwin University with an APA and awarded a Qantas Foundation Encouragement of Contemporary Art Award. With assistance from Qantas Foundation and Australia Council ArtStart Talitha visited Aboriginal communities through North Australia, assisted at Documenta 13 Germany, undertook a residency in New York, travelled through Europe and held studio residencies in Melbourne, Adelaide and regional NSW. This is the first time Talitha has shown work in Sydney where she is currently based.
Positioned in the heart of Glebe, Interlude Gallery runs as an open source association, transforming and expanding with the invaluable participation from our dynamic group of Sydney based collaborators and contributors, as well as our stable of international and local artists. Interlude Gallery is not selective but rather elective, inviting the general public to participate, to transform paradigms through art as a way of living, and living as a way of art.
