For 60 years AMES Australia has assisted new and recently arrived migrants and refugees to settle into Victoria. AMES Australia offers much more than just teaching English as they not only work with new arrivals but also with the community, business and Government to develop sustainable and effective settlement solutions for the whole Victorian community. Their vision is "full participation for all in a cohesive and diverse society."
AMES Australia also supports a range of artists through a professional development and exhibition program to enable them to share their stories and exhibit their works. Since 2010, AMES Australia has organised the Heartlands Art Project, an eclectic art exhibition that gives a voice to some of the communities who have found a new home in Australia and provides an opportunity to recognise the contributions that new arrivals have made to the wider community in Australia. It also offers a glimpse into the hopes, dreams, passions and experiences of the millions of humans displaced by conflict and affords them the opportunity to share their traditions and culture with the wider Australian community.
Sponsored by the Victorian Multicultural Commission and supported by Walker Street Gallery & Arts Centre and Fed Square, this year"s artists have migrated from Syria, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Poland, Pakistan, Iran, Tibet and Zimbabwe. They have produced artworks using an eclectic array of media, including painting, music, poetry, photography, sculpture, engraving, mosaic and mask making, for this year"s exhibition.
