Astrology is an ancient celestial system that purports to divine information about one"s personality or future. Controversially, Astrology arouses its share of opposition for masquerading or posing as authoritative. This idea is expanded as the characters depicted impersonate or anthropomorphise their roles in handmade often rudimentary or improvised costumes and face paint.
"Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human traits, emotions, and intentions to non-human entities and is considered to be an innate tendency of human psychology" (In Wikipedia).
Olsen"s images are created by using anthropomorphic phenomena in collaboration with astrological schemas (Eastern and Western horoscopes and associated spirit or totem animals).
Olsen believes in the ability to affect one"s own destiny. Her perceptions of the psyche and of relating are both personal and universal. In accordance with these principles, this body of work has been intentionally permitted to evolve organically, with a free associative response.
Olsen"s background as an art therapist and life model has been pivotal in influencing the direction of her art practice and in particularly this exhibition; Prophecy.
Exhibition runs: 26 April to 14 May.
Opening Drinks: Sunday 30 April, 2 to 4pm
