Artists Sete Tele and Mark Cain travelled out to the Punmu and Kunawarritji communities of RAWA Community School in February and March 2023, onto the lands of the Martu People, where they worked with Punmu and Kunawarritji children to help them express the importance of country in connection to their identities, through photography, special effects and music making.
The children explored portraiture, layering their photographs with special effects and personal quotes to create their unique portraits. Their artworks were celebrated in a final assembly attended by the students, school staff and community members!
Participants were enthusiastic and curious about experiencing new photography techniques, considering how they can use media to help their own creative voices flourish. The children spent most of the residency workshops exploring Country and the connection to their identities.
At Punmu, children invited their families to attend a celebration of the artwork created as well as attending a school assembly and a celebratory lunch for participants and their families. At Kunawarritji, participants played home-made instruments for invited family and community members and experimented with a blue screen photo booth taking photos of themselves and others. The participants at both campuses were very proud of their creations.
The artists left the photography app with the school when they left, so the participants can further explore their special effects techniques. This residency was proudly supported by BHP.
Creative Challenge is AWESOME Arts’ core education program that embeds contemporary teaching artists in schools across the state. The residency program aims to build pride in the community and explore self-expression through project management and creative learning skills.
