Katherine Stockmann lives in a tight-knit community "“ she's woven into the fabric of the place. One day she makes a disturbing discovery: the famed spa water in the town is toxic. Katherine realises that her beloved community has been built on poison and lies, and the truth must be told. But to her horror, people refuse to believe her and instead turn to threats and alienation to silence her. Does Katherine fight for the truth even if it means the loss of income, family, community and identity? Kate Mulvany shines as the insider who finds herself out in the cold.
"This is the drama of our times. Truth sacrificed to expedience. The voice of the community enlisted by corporate interests," said Belvoir Artistic Director Eamon Flack. The play questions our individual responsibility in the face of overwhelming forces. "How far can any one person go? And what is too far?" asked Flack.
In this post-truth world, a place of alternative facts, Melissa Reeves' adaptation of Ibsen's classic An Enemy of the People will deliver a powerful punch for contemporary audiences. An Enemy of the People also highlights environmental issues and their conflict with greed and big money, the treatment and responsibility of whistle-blowers, and the head-in-sand or open hostility they often have to face.
Cast: Kate Mulvany with Peter Carroll, Catherine Davies, Leon Ford, Steve Le Marquand, Kenneth Moraleda, Nikita Waldron and Charles Wu.
