Toyota Australia last year announced a $1.8 million investment towards the immediate construction of around 2km of the 7.5km shared trail for pedestrians and cyclists.
The investment includes provision for a series of public artworks or artwork elements and interpretative signage along the trail.
Mayor of Hobsons Bay Cr Peter Hemphill said the public art would add to the trail experience and was another important contribution from Toyota Australia to the community.
"The final commissioned work(s) will become part of the public art collection of the city, which has developed over the years to be an important part of our identity and will complement the creek's natural environment," said Cr Hemphill.
"Thanks to Toyota's contribution, this public art commission will help ensure the trail is a unique experience for everybody to enjoy - an environment that has been transformed over the past 10 years thanks to the tireless work of the Hobsons Bay community and the Friends of the Kororoit Creek."
Toyota Australia Public Affairs Manager, Katarina Persic, said the company was pleased to be working with council on this project.
"We have a long and proud association with Hobson's Bay Council. The bike trail is our way of thanking the local community for their support and acceptance of our manufacturing plant over many years," Ms Persic said.
"Although we will not be building cars in Australia from the end of 2017, we will still have a presence at our Altona site in the future and look forward to seeing the bike trail and art installation come to life."
Artists will be shortlisted based on experience in public art, artistic innovation, experience in projects of a similar scale, ability to meet the June 2017 deadline and strong project management skills.
Expressions of Interest close on Monday, 18 April 2016. It is planned that applicants will be shortlisted by May with up to four artists being invited to develop concepts. The successful artist(s) will be announced in September 2016. The works would be scheduled for installation by June 2017.

Work on the trail will begin later this year.
