Toast' is the musical brainchild of Marcus & Basquiat JR (the producer behind the 2015 Joey Badass hit 'Christ Conscious'). The unlikely duo connected through Twitter over mutual respect for each other's music and set about creating a song that pushes the envelope of hip ¬hop in Australia. 'Toast' is an ode to Marcus himself, to the work he's put in to get to this point, to his crew Rawdivercity which is made up of fellow artists such as Baro, Charlie Threads, Nasty Mars & The Martians and many other equally talented individuals, and to the incredible music hub that Australia is. It is also a statement of greater things to follow from Marcus. Sonically, 'Toast' is very reminiscent of a classic NYC hip ¬hop sound, combined with Marcus' typical effortless flow, top¬shelf metaphors, and incredibly witty wordplay which shines through in bars like "Got the squad with me need more doors / hotel's with more floors / ring for the city like it's Mordor / If these tracks were bodies, we'd be warlords". Recent Triple J Unearthed favorite Squidgenini also lends a hand on 'Toast' with her stunning vocals. Marcus will be toasting the single at a special upcoming headline show, more information to come.
Marcus' second mixtape featuring more acclaimed collaborations and a tour with his new live band is to be expected later on in 2016.
"DOOOOOPE!" ~¬ Nottz [on 'Toast']
"Marcus: definitely a name to keep your ears and eyes on." ¬ ~ Dom Alessio, Triple J
"The young emcee manages to toe the line perfectly between the original rawness of OG Australian hip hop and also the new school local movement as it has a little more of an international appeal to it" ¬ Cool Accidents "Marcus is no act. The second you meet the guy, you know: he's already gone through every day¬ to¬day struggle the young Australian rap audience is currently living... now (unlike most) he's ready AND willing to spread their message." ¬~ THANK GUARD Magazine
