Merrigong Theatre Company is proud to present Michelle Law’s Miss Peony, an inter-generational comedy for 21st century Australia, from 30th August to 2nd September at Illawarra Performing Arts Centre.
A tri-lingual show, Miss Peony is a glitzy, glamorous and slightly-unhinged dive into the world of beauty pageants, featuring projected captions in English, Cantonese and Simplified Chinese simultaneously throughout the show.
Lily’s grandmother was a beauty queen back in Hong Kong. She doesn’t care that times have changed, and that Lily lives in a new country and a new century. She realises that Lily’s caught between worlds and prods her to enter the Chinese community beauty pageant, the highly competitive Miss Peony. She will not take no for an answer.
And to make matters worse, she is a ghost.
Written by Michelle Law, the show will be directed by La Boite Artistic Director Courtney Stewart (starred in Belvoir's Single Asian Female, directed STC’s Top Coat) alongside Nicole Pignon (25A’s Moon Rabbit Rising) as assistant director. The cast includes Stephanie Jack (TV’s Deadloch, The Maids), Gabrielle Chan (SBS’s Hungry Ghosts, STC’s Chimerica), Deborah Faye Lee (Playlab Theatre’s White China, Vox Theatre’s Silenced) Mabel Li (SBS’s The Tailings), Jeffrey Liu (Malthouse Theatre’s K-Box, Hayes Theatre’s The Lucky Country) and Shirong Wu (Cursed!).
Merrigong Theatre Company’s Acting Artistic Director, Leland Kean said, “Michelle Law’s Miss Peony just adds to the formidable and seemingly endless creative talents from one of the most important voices in the Australian cultural landscape. We cannot wait to present this wonderful work from Michelle for our audiences and welcome Belvoir back to our stages for the first time since our reopening.”
Playwright, Michelle Law said, “I’m so excited to finally be sharing Miss Peony with Australia after two false starts due to covid. Third time is a charm, right! This year we will be touring our debut season, bringing all of the glitz, glamour and ghostliness of Miss Peony to cities across the east coast of Australia. Miss Peony will be performed in English, Cantonese and Mandarin (with surtitles in all three languages), making it inclusive for multilingual friends and family members. Join us at the theatre for an evening of laughter, tears, and pageantry!”
