MERRIGONGX Presents A PLACE IN THE SULTAN’S KITCHEN
Merrigong Theatre Company’s annual artists’ program, MERRIGONGX returns in 2024, kicking off with Joshua Hinton’s A Place in the Sultan’s Kitchen or How to Make the Perfect One-Pot Chicken Curry, at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre from the 8th to 10th August.

Theatre-maker and singer-songwriter, Josh Hinton, weaves together childhood memories and family folklore passed down the generations, exploring how they’ve shaped his adult view of himself, and how we are all made of memories and stories.

Josh Hinton said, “MERRIGONGX provides a unique opportunity for me to tell my story, a story really rooted in experiences built from growing up in Wollongong and stories told to me by my family from around the world. The memories and experiences I draw on may be unique to me, but will be recognisable to a local audience. Everyone has a Grandma with crazy stories and family recipes. Love for food, family and music is universal.”

A Place in the Sultan’s Kitchen fills the theatre with exotic smells as Josh attempts to make his grandmother’s chicken curry live on stage, telling stories of his grandparents’ formative experiences, transporting the audience from the backstreets of Sri Lanka to a bustling city in India, from a schoolyard in Iran to a South African farm, and finally to Wollongong.

Leland Kean, Artistic Development Manager, said, “A beautiful show about family made by family. It traverses the world exploring Josh's cultural background whilst mixing its rich narrative in his grandmother's chicken curry cooked live on stage.”

MERRIGONGX places artists and their practice at the centre of their community. From in-house creative developments to full-blown public presentations of new work, and everything in between, MERRIGONGX provides independent artists with financial, technical, marketing, and artistic resources.
