Merrigong Theatre Company’s annual artists’ program, MERRIGONGX presents Nathan Harrison’s 'Birdsong of Tomorrow' at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre from the 22nd to 24th August.
Everyday in our gardens and our streets, birds sing. They sing songs passed down through generations, songs of a world that’s gone and a world that’s changing. Birds fill every part of the planet with melody and colour. They soar, swim and run. And a lot of them are chickens.
A blend of science, storytelling, music and projection from a MERRIGONGX all-star team of Nathan Harrison and Emma McManus (Sorry Sorry Sorry), Tom Hogan (Mount Hopeless) and Solomon Thomas (UFO, COIL), Birdsong of Tomorrow is a playful and heartfelt look at the birds around us, and what they might sing when we’re gone.
Nathan Harrison said, “In the last few years birds have been a way for me to find connection and perspective. I’ve been working on this show for a while now with some of my favourite collaborators, and it’s a dream to finish making it at Merrigong—a place I’ve visited since I was a kid, somewhere that’s been instrumental to my development as an artist. For me, theatre is a space where we can get together to untangle big, complicated ideas, and it doesn’t get better than doing that somewhere that feels so much like home.”
Leland Kean, Merrigong Theatre Company's Artistic Development Manager, said, “'Birdsong of Tomorrow' brings together a supergroup of artists from Australia's contemporary theatre and performance sector. This is a deeply personal story and passion of Nathan's, with a message that will echo in your heart and stay with you like the calls of the birds it explores long after you leave the theatre.”
'Birdsong of Tomorrow' is produced with support from BrandX, Griffin Theatre Company and the Malcolm Robertson Foundation.
MERRIGONGX places artists and their practice at the centre of their community. From in-house creative developments to full-blown public presentations of new work, and everything in between, MERRIGONGX provides independent artists with financial, technical, marketing, and artistic resources.
