Merrigong Theatre Company’s annual artists’ program, MERRIGONGX presents Rose Maher’s The Cardinal Rules at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre from the 31st October to 2nd November.
With a dynamic ensemble cast led by actor, theatre-maker and clown Rose Maher (Merrigong Theatre Company’s A Midsummer Night's Dream, 2023), this inventive eulogy mashes heartfelt personal storytelling with visually stunning physical theatre, inspired by Rose’s Catholic upbringing in Canberra circa 1997.
The Cardinal Rules explores the beauty and complexity of a tight knit community, indoctrinated into silence when their voices were needed the most.
Leland Kean, Merrigong Theatre Company’s Artistic Development Manager said, “The Cardinal Rules is the third and final presentation for the outstanding MERRIGONGX 2024 season. A deeply personal and moving story from wonderful local artist Rose Maher, brought to life by the exciting new collective Hurrah Hurrah, it is another example of the depth of talent in the Illawarra and Merrigong’s commitment to local artists and the development of new Australia voices and stories.”
Rose Maher said, “I am beyond thrilled to be presenting my original concept and stories The Cardinal Rules. The project marks a significant moment in my journey as an artist leading a team to tell this personal and culturally complex story. I spent my childhood in Canberra, in a Catholic community for which this project is loosely based. If you have ever questioned the values you were brought up with, but still can't seem to shake them, then this show will speak to you. I really could not have made this work without the incredible program and team that is MERRIGONGX.”
Touching and playful, this ambitious new work invites the audience into a conversation about the moments that shift our faith and perspective.
MERRIGONGX places artists and their practice at the centre of their community. From in-house creative developments to full-blown public presentations of new work, and everything in between, MERRIGONGX provides independent artists with financial, technical, marketing, and artistic resources.
