The Metropolitan Orchestra (TMO) with Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams are thrilled to once again feature a world premiere work from Australian Composer Jim Coyle in their dramatic final Met Concert of the year on October 27th.
Following from the triumphant premiere of his work "The Bright Seraphim" in 2017, the rhythmical vibrancy of Coyle's latest offering titled "Dancing with Billy Bray" will provide an electric opening to this fifth Met Concert of 2018 titled Drama'. Coyle's new work explores the exuberant, energetic joy that was characteristic of Billy Bray who was a Cornish miner and preacher. Even in its contemplative moments, there is an irrepressible energy in this work that reflects Billy's dynamism.
Contrary to the vibrant optimism of the Coyle piece, Elgar's famous Cello Concerto is both contemplative and sorrowful. A cornerstone of the solo cello repertoire, TMO introduces one of its formidable principal players, Ezmi Pepper, to perform this dramatic work for cello. "A key aspect of TMO's mission is to showcase the enormous talent within TMO's pool of outstanding Australian musicians. It is our honour to give them an opportunity to perform at the highest levels, where they can share their significant passion and skill with our audience and their fellow musicians. Ezmi is a beautifully passionate and extraordinarily talented performer who will shine under the spotlight of this emotive work," said TMO Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams.
Continuing the evenings rollercoaster ride of musical emotion is Franck's radical Symphony in D. The last work created by the Belgian-born, French composer and the only symphony written by him, this ambitious work is considered the greatest composition in his small but prime catalogue. Often regarded as one of the most significant nineteenth century French symphonies ever written, the Symphony in D is rarely performed in the modern musical canon. This impressive work will present a dramatically unique conclusion to The Metropolitan Orchestra's triumphant 2018 Met concert season.
