Mythical Unicorn Sets Scene for the 2017 Adelaide Fringe
A pop art inspired, mythical unicorn design has been unveiled as the official poster for the 2017 Adelaide Fringe. A pop art inspired, mythical unicorn design has been unveiled as the official poster for the 2017 Adelaide Fringe.
Created by French-born, Barossa-based graphic designer Jennifer Rimbault, the vibrant pink-and-green poster was revealed amid much fanfare in front of the Adelaide City Council Chambers on Wednesday, October 19.
Adelaide Fringe Director and CEO Heather Croall said the pop art unicorn design was the standout from about 200 submissions that flooded in from across the globe this year.
"We called for a poster that echoed the exciting and magical spirit of the Fringe. The Fringe transforms Adelaide into a wild wonderland of mythical proportions and it encourages people to step outside their usual schedules and be whatever they want to be. Jennifer's design captures that," Ms Croall said.
"The Adelaide Fringe is all about discovering the unexpected. Every year we encourage audiences to take a risk on the unknown and we think Jennifer's unicorn is the perfect embodiment of that Fringe message."
Ms Rimbault said she used a unicorn in her design because she wanted to give a glimpse of the artistic "wonderland" created by the Fringe.
"I think the festival is as mythical and magical as a unicorn. The creature in my poster isn't what people would expect, though "“ it is quirky and unusual, just like the Fringe," she said.
"I was so surprised my design was chosen and I feel blessed that it will be used to promote such a loved event."
To coincide with the launch, tickets to about 40 Fringe shows also went on sale ahead of the full program launch on December 2.
From an evening with provocative American singer, songwriter and playwright Amanda Palmer to African acrobatic show Cirque Africa and a line-up of some of Australia's best comedy acts, the first taste of next year's program promises to deliver variety and new surprises.
"The 2017 Fringe is going to be the best yet and we can't wait to reveal the full program of super talented acts in early December," Ms Croall said.
