Natural found objects and creative thinking helps Nullagine students bloom!
Students painted sticks and seed pods to create animals, made flower crowns, cardboard houses and a wonderful short film!

In Term 3 of 2023, AWESOME artists Leith Alexander & Sally Stoneman travelled to Nullagine Primary School, on Ngadju Country, where the students explored many different artistic processes; painting, building sculptures made from found and upcycled objects, and planning, filming and editing a short film.
The Nullagine students explored 2023 Creative Challenge theme of Bloom both as a provocation on what they personally need to bloom, and literally, exploring Country and taking advantage of the fact that native Mulla Mulla and Sturt desert pea were both in bloom.
Surveying their natural environment, the students found and brought back sticks, flowers and leaves to the classroom to create flower frames. They worked together in pairs and small groups, workshopping ideas and exploring their different creative strengths.
The residency ended with a community celebration, where the artists, students, teachers and parents watched the young artists’ videos on the big screen in the classroom, and admired the installation the students had created.
Creative Challenge is AWESOME Arts’ core education program that embeds contemporary teaching artists in schools across the state. The residency program aims to build pride in community and explore self-expression through project management and creative learning skills.
