Its marketplace in the world wide web contains original paintings, photography, drawings, sculpture, installations and digital artworks by young artists from all over the country. After the opening of online space LeCorbusier Art started site-specific and pop-up exhibitions as an answer to economy's recession and conservative culture politics in Russia.
The Russian economy has been battered by a slump of more than 60 percent in the price of oil in the past years, as well as international sanctions. That's chipped away at the wealth of the collectors who are among the biggest buyers of Russian art. The mix of online, site-specific and pop-up exhibition is unusual for the local context. But it's the only way to sell and promote Russian contemporary art among the middle and upper middle class in Russia and abroad.
LeCorbusier Art never knows where to pop up next. The act of constantly relocating the exposition is an opportunistic response to the empty coworking space typical of a recessionary economy and a form of performance art. Temporary art events less formal than a gallery or museum but more formal than private artistic showing of work. The idea began in 2007 in New York City where space for exhibiting artistic work is very limited. Although it originated from New York City. Pop-up exhibitions occur all around the world and really become very popular.
Young creatives are doing a lot more start-ups. Their projects inspired LeCorbusier Art to make the first pop-up exhibition of young artists in Moscow. The team invited architecture and design world insiders to the fashionable Workplace at CCC Fabrica to see artworks by Marfa Gudkova, Asya Maslova and Yana Chursina. Than LeCorbusier Art's team came to the idea of making site-specific exhibitions. Inspiration for this start-up came after the artist Oleg Savunov sent his portfolio. It contained This is the place series of works "” the result of site-specific exhibition which was made on the suburbs of the Vasilevsky Island in Saint-Petersburg.
LeCorbusier Art's projects concept aims to offer an alternative route to the international art market. By exhibiting art outside of the cultural, economic and political context in which it was created in an early stage of the artist's career, the artist becomes less dependent on their local art market and more so on a global one, or rather, multiple local ones.
