Acclaimed Queensland writer and performer Karen Lee Roberts brings her hard-hitting blues cabaret chameleon to the Butterfly Club from June 10 until June 15.
Karen is joined on stage by the legendary jazz-blues pianist Jeff Usher to tell the story of Alexandra, a woman struggling with mental wellness, and feeling like a chameleon as she negotiates the demands of often-confusing everyday situations.
Alexandra is a great survivor and storyteller, who comically and dramatically evokes her life through Roberts' performance. The cabaret's moving and comical depiction of everyday scenarios have had audiences around the country riveted.
In the words of Barry Stone (reviewer), Roberts' "sublimely talented approach will have you glued to her performance".
Chameleon speaks of madness, ostracism, ignorance and rising above adversity. Taking you from brilliant highs to devastating lows, the critically-acclaimed show is wrought with intimacy, humour and a walk down the thin line between insanity and epiphany.
Karen lee roberts is no stranger to struggle. Battling bi-polar disorder for more than twenty years, she credits her artistic practice for her hard-won stability and prosperity. "my work has always been about breaking down barriers to talking about mental wellness, and chameleon is really designed to take audience members on that ride with me. I want audiences to engage with the songs and content, and experience the raw trauma and brilliant ecstasy of life."
Employing stories of hope and hilarity, the show documents Alexandra's intense experience of the ups and downs of living, as well as her achievement of health and stability against the odds. Chameleon challenges audiences to engage with the show's content and themes, reminding each person out there that they have a friend, a family member, or a little part of themselves that can relate to Alexandra's journey.
