The Kings Cross Arts & Cultural Festival, Inc. and The CrossArt Projects are co-hosting three talks about aspects of our heritage:
Transformation and Optimism: Apartment Development of the Interwar Period in Kings Cross, Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay
Jennifer Hill will speak on "Transformation And Optimism: Apartment Development of the Interwar Period in Kings Cross, Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay".
Jennifer is a director of Architectural Projects Pty. Ltd. and a founder of the Art Deco Society NSW. She is renowned for her apartment survey of Kings Cross and Darlinghurst.
The Minerva-Metro: Icon of The Cross
Gavin Harris will talk about the history of Sydney's best known / unknown building, the Minerva-Metro Theatre, its architecture and its engagement with the arts. The Minerva-Metro building is a rare example of the interwar Expressionist / moderne style. Usually mislabelled as Art Deco', it exemplifies Guy Crick and Bruce Furse's mature style. Eighty years later, it is a National Treasure.
Sulman's Vision: Planning Federation Sydney
Zeny Edwards will speak about her research on John Sulman, the Australian architect who was at the forefront of the movement for an Australian "style" of architecture. He was a proponent of the City Beautiful movement in architecture and was an influential town planner.
Zeny published A Life of Purpose: A Biography of John Sulman (2017).
