Shooting for the stars in Wiluna!
Visual artist Tania Ferrier and media artist John Toohey packed their bags in 2021 and embarked on a journey to Wiluna on the lands of the Martu People for a two-week Creative Challenge residency.
The children in Wiluna spent their October school holidays leading a project with our AWESOME Artists that was truly out of this world! To explore the 2021 Creative Challenge theme of “Gathering” the young artists experimented with Papier-mâché, alfoil, painting, photography and sculpture. This residency was proudly supported by BHP.
After discussions about the theme of Gathering, the children expressed a keen interest in the world beyond earth! A rocket ship was decided to be the task and with only two weeks to do it the young artists started right away. Everyone enjoyed getting messy as they utilised a splatter paint technique to create an intergalactic backdrop and stand for the rocket ship. Using cane, the group then started to build a rocket-shaped frame that was later covered in Papier-mâché and alfoil. Participants selected, edited, printed and cut out images of stars, meteors and planets to decorate the rocket-ship installation and populate their galaxy with life!
The final piece looked out of this world!
“The real success of the project was seen once the rocket was up in front of the backdrop. Then children could see how the results of a disjointed process had come together.” Said Artists Tania and John.
Parents, friends and community members joined the young artists on the final day of the residency to celebrate their amazing work. A selection of healthy fruits and vegetables were served up for the guests to eat. The children and all celebration guests were invited to take photos in the space-themed installation and print a picture to take home. Lasting memories made in Wiluna.
