STÉPHANE GUIRAN | A DANCE OF IMPERMANENCE @ MARS GALLERY
5 MARCH "“ 2 APRIL. Guiran's professional career began in graphic design and the tight line-work of that practice was reflected in his shift to sculpture in 2002. He had completed a year-long residency in Barcelona, where he mastered the art of metallurgy, torturing and twisting steel into organic, elegant forms. But it did not take long for Guiran to turn from pure metallurgy to inspired al-chemy. @AndyDinan #MARSGallery @marsgallery

Gradually his sleek steel structures were engulfed in crystal and glass, becoming more and more organic as time passed by. Hinting at calligraphy and Japanese haikus "“ as Guiran himself suggests, life; "sketched out in this plant alchemy that transmutes lead, silica and bronze into a path of lightness."
His sculptures yielded seeds that in turn evoked new forms and new variations. The crystal seeds sprung new fruit; the sculptures were soon joined by photo- graphs and drawings. Guiran was creating an entire world, one in which he was both topographer and gardener, alchemist and magician. The results, vibrating with new life forms, seem to evoke a continual sense of growth.
Over ten years ago the director of MARS Gallery, Andy Dinan, working with curator Kerry Gardner (who had first seen Guiran's work in his home village of Eygalieres in 2004), took an inspired risk in exhibiting Guiran's work who was only just emerging. Since that time Guiran has moved on to become a global pres- ence with his sleek modernist constructions.
Over a decade later, in early 2015 Dinan went on a mission to see Guiran's most recent work and meet up with the artist at Switzerland's Art Basel. The meeting resulted in Guiran agreeing to another showing in Australia, which will again be organized in collaboration with Gardner.
Guiran claims that "the connection between nature and abstraction has become a pathway of, and to- wards, a sense of humility that derives its force from our frailty in this shifting world. The dance of impermanence is a way of enriching our relationship with nature. With our nature." A nature of vibrating ab- stractions, forests of crystal and gardens of glass. "“ Ashley Crawford
