The 2016 Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship for emerging opera singers 35 years & under offers a total prize value of $57,000.

This scholarship has provided critical turning point experiences and career opportunities for internationally recognised names, with one of the most famous being Dame Joan Sutherland, who began her rise to fame by winning the scholarship in 1949.

Originally known as The Sun Aria, it was established with the First City of Sydney Eisteddfod in 1933 to discover fine voices throughout Australia and New Zealand. The (Sydney) Sun newspaper closed in 1988 and from 1989 until 2015 McDonald's Australia generously supported this important opportunity for opera singers.

Entrants can compete in the heats by live performance or by submitting an audio recording of the entrant given in 2016.

Singers that qualify will perform in a finals concert accompanied by the North Sydney Orchestra conducted by Maestro Steven Hillinger at The Concourse Concert Hall, Chatswood on 24 July 2016.
