With over 3,000 student entries from 60 countries, the D&AD Awards celebrates creative and craft excellence in design and advertising and is often referred to as the Oscars of the design world.
Students Richard Anderson, Diana Tsuchida, Alex Kastanas and Dimos Tsalikis were thrilled beyond belief to share in the New Blood Graphite Pencil award for their innovative campaign ONYA Bike Share.
Responding to the brief to design a bike share scheme in a city of their choice, Richard said that the group chose Sydney with the aim of branding their ONYA Bike Share in a way that was fun and turned it from a utility into an experience. The team were tasked with building the scheme from the ground up, including developing a name, logo, bike wrap design, stand and supporting wayfinding app.
We really wanted the product to cater both to international visitors and locals alike and allow users to fully interact with the city and enjoy its many hidden gems.
We are all absolutely stoked beyond belief to have won this award, it still doesn't feel real, and it's such an honour, he said.
Alex said We are all in utter shock, I still can't believe that we've won. We knew we had a strong finished product and we worked so hard and put in so many hours of work, it's incredible to have that effort rewarded like this.
Dimos added, I kept checking my emails all day to see if we had won, and called our Head Teacher Louise Lammers with the incredible news as soon as I found out - after I had of course called my wife. Being a mature-age student at 41 years old it just makes the win that much more valuable as I know it will give me a leg up on the younger competition when applying for jobs in the future.
Diana, an international student from Brazil, said the achievement was even sweeter for her.
Coming from so far and then achieving this really has given me an incredible sense of belonging and I'm just so proud to have been part of such an incredible design team, Diana said.
During the creative process, experts from the graphic design industry attended TAFE NSW Design Centre Enmore to mentor the students. Providing them with guidance and feedback that they would receive working in the industry.
Richard explained, Fortunately we were able to complete a lot of the concept and design process before the onset of COVID-19 in Australia and had the chance to work with some absolutely incredible industry mentors along the way.
We all feel confident that the practical skills and experience that we've gained and the connections we've made whilst completing this project and throughout the Advanced Diploma have truly set us up to be key players in the industry.
Enrolments are now open for Semester 2, 2020. To find out more about studying Graphic Design at TAFE NSW visit www.tafensw.edu.au or call 131 601.
