The Art of Botanical Illustration: 2016 - A New Direction
Exhibition and Sale
The Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne have pleasure in presenting their thirteenth biennial The Art of Botanical Illustration exhibition from 15 to 30 October at Domain House, Dallas Brooks Drive, Melbourne. This year, in addition to conventional botanical illustration, we are encouraging artists to go outside the traditional botanical illustration terms of reference and produce some innovative works of art "“ hence "A New Direction".The exhibition's growing international profile, amongst the worldwide resurgence of interest in botanical art, has become a focus for both artists and collectors.
This is Australia's premier selected exhibition of botanical works "“ with approximately 150 paintings being selected this year from 300 entries from local, interstate and overseas artists.
The scientific accuracy of the work submitted for selection is a critical part of the high standard expected for inclusion in the exhibition.
Among those exhibiting are two artists who have received major awards this year: Sandra Sanger obtained a Gold Medal at the Royal Horticultural Society's Annual Botanical Art Show in England, and Pauline Dwyer was awarded first prize at the prestigious Margaret Flockton Award in Sydney "“ for scientific botanical illustration in pen and ink.
Many beautiful works have been purchased from this renowned exhibition for inclusion in the Royal Botanic Gardens' State Botanical Collection, which is held in the National Herbarium in Melbourne.
